Chapter Three

War Machine

The founding patriarch of the Ottomans was now dead and gone, his armies in place and ready to strike like a coiled snake at the Byzantines. Orhan, the son of Osman, was now Ghazi Sultan. An accomplished field commander in his own right, Orhan and his heirs would continue to spread the branches of Osman’s dream tree. In the 1300s and 1400s the Ottomans would conquer an area to rival the Romans at their zenith. The use of cannons, Special Forces, Islam, and economics to terrific outcomes were the hallmark of Ottoman power and became the national brand. It was in this period that the mere utterance of the word “Ottoman” or “Turks” sent Europeans to the privy to clean out their britches.

Bursa was captured and made the Ottoman capital in 1324, 2 years prior to Osman’s death. While he was unable to lead the campaign, his heir Orhan commanded the troops. The capture of Bursa sent the Byzantines reeling. This put the Ottomans with the tactical and strategic advantage. In the following years, Nicaea (modern İznik) fell in 1331, and Nicomedia fell under the Ottoman sword in 1337.
